One man is dead following an altercation between a father and son.

drug arrestCarthage Police Chief Jim Vanover tells KGAS News that Robert Lee Barkins, Jr., 44, was killed after being hit by a car and pinned against a tree on Cook Street.

The incident happened Monday at around 12:30 pm.

Vanover said Barkins’ father, Robert Lee Barkins, Sr., 66, was treated and released from a local hospital for injuries to his head from his vehicle crashing into a tree.

The victim’s body was taken to Dallas for an autopsy, but police have confirmed that the car that hit him was his father’s vehicle.

According to Vanover, there was evidence that “there had been some sort of violence going on there.”

Family members told investigators the men got into an argument Monday morning and it escalated. Vanover said a handgun was recovered with two magazines.

Barkins’ Jr. was from Tyler and had recently moved to Carthage to help his father, who is a mechanic, in his business.

Vanover asks anyone with any information to contact the Carthage Police Dept. at 903-693-3866.
