KGAS RADIO went on the air in October 1955 at 1,000 watts. In January 1978, the FCC authorized a transmitting power increase to 2,500 watts. Ten years later, in January, the FCC authorized station KGAS to remain on the air with reduced power all night. In September 1988, Jerry T. Hanszen and his wife, Wanda, purchased KGAS RADIO and in July 1991, acquired FCC authorization to construct a new FM broadcast station. Updated equipment and new promotions have increased the quality of the station and broadened the listening audience extensively.

KGAS 104.3 FM plays classic country while 1590 AM/103.7 FM plays ESPN Radio. KGAS is strongly news oriented with local and regional news five times daily in addition to Westwood One News and Texas State Network News. Also included are The Sounds of Texast, Soundboard News, Weather and Obituaries. Other popular programs are Elaine Etheridge in the Morning,  Panola Pride, Swap Shop with Elaine, Jack Dillard’s Morning Farm Program, Bev Brown’s “Talk It Over”, Bob Griffin’s “Potpourri” and Sunday Devotionals.

KGAS Radio broadcasts play-by-play coverage of Texas Rangers baseball, Dallas Cowboys football, college football, Panola College baseball and basketball, Carthage High School football, basketball and baseball, and other area high schools including Beckville, Elysian Fields, Tenaha, Timpson and Gary.

KGAS Radio is a mix of music, news, views and sports for the entire East Texas and Northwest Louisiana area.


JERRY T. HANSZEN brings to KGAS RADIO a background of successful sales, management and music. As a music major and educator, Hanszen has successfully guided high school musicians to numerous state and national awards with performances for the Dallas Cowboys and the New Orleans Saints and to winning the first ever NBC TV-broadcast marching contest associated with the renowned Tournement of Roses parade. In sales, Hanszen has received the National Sales Award from Selmer Company.

Hanszen has operated radio stations since the purchase of KGAS RADIO in 1988. Even before joining KGAS RADIO in Carthage, Texas, Hanszen provided color commentary for area high school contests with veteran broadcaster, Bev Brown. You may now hear Hanszen on Texas State Network news reporting the happenings of East Texas. You may also tune in to hear him boradcast U.I.L. events which are aired on many radio and cable networks throughout the state.

Hanszen began operating a sister station in Marshall,TX KMHT RADIO in August of 2002. Hanszen is past president of the Texas Association of Broadcasters (TAB) and is currently serving on the National Association of Broadcasters Radio Board. Hanszen is the 2002 recipient of the TAB’s Broadcaster of the Year award.

Wanda Hanszen, owner

WANDA HANSZEN has added greatly to the KGAS RADIO staff. Wanda is co-owner of the station and is often heard as an ‘on-air’ personality. With a background including a degree in art and an extensive career in dance choreography and instruction, Wanda adds that spark of fine arts to the station. From coverage of band halftime shows and concerts to serving as anchor person for election night coverage…when you want to know exactly how it is… Wanda is there!



Regina Hayes, office manager

REGINA HAYES brings a lot of experience to our staff as Office Manager. Regina is married to Ronnie Hayes and they have 3 children and 7 grandchildren. Regina keeps us on track with billing and payroll. She’s the most popular member of our staff on payday!





Judy McNatt, sales manager

JUDY MCNATT has been sales manager at KGAS for many years. She was a teacher before that. Judy has three children, who were all reared in Carthage. She spends a lot of time in Dallas or Tyler on the weekends, enjoying being with her 7 grandchildren Judy makes everyone feel at home and is great at entertaining everyone. She helps make KGAS a fun place to work. Judy is responsible for making sure that advertisers get the best service and the most for their buck. She’s been satisfying customers for a long time and they keep coming back because they know she’ll continue to offer that special one-on-one service.


Elaine Etheridge, chief operator

ELAINE ETHERIDGE, chief operator, news director and radio announcer. Elaine and her husband Wayland moved from Alabama to Carthage with their three children – Casey, Jill and Shane – in May of 2004.  Wayland retired from General Motors Shreveport and is a deputy for Harrison County Sheriff’s Office.  Casey married Cameron Stanley and made her parents grandparents of a little girl, Kamy, who is almost 2 years old. Jill and Shane attend college. Elaine worked at Townsquare Media in Shreveport on KWKH, when it was the Home of the Legends, on KISS Country FM and KVKI, 96.1. Before that, she was a country music deejay in Alabama. Elaine did news for Jerry Falwell’s radio station WRVL, when she was a college student at Liberty University.


Trevor Bullard, news and sports

 TREVOR BULLARD, news and sports. Trevor Bulllard recently graduated from Stephen F. Austin State University with a major in Mass Communications and a minor in Journalism. Trevor is originally from the Houston area. He’s a big fan of the Astros, Houston Rockets and loves NFL football. Trevor works 1-6 pm doing news and sports.  Trevor has one brother and 3 dogs that he loves to death. His dogs are a German Shepherd named Jade; a Border Collie named Zeus, and a yellow Lab named, Will.



Annette Ellis, assistant office manager

ANNETTE ELLIS, assistant office manager. Annette helps Regina handle phone calls, soundboard items and anything else that needs to be done. Annette is married and enjoys her pet, which is a pit bull dog named Milo.





Dallas O’Donnell, afternoon news and sports

DALLAS O’DONNELL, news and sports. Dallas started out part time with KGAS, running ball games and landed a permanent job, digging up news stories and keeping on top of sports. He regularly interviews coaches and works as the producer of Coach’s Corner. Dallas also has been instrumental in bringing the Friday Night Scoreboard Show, which broadcasts high school scores during football season. Dallas will be leaving us soon to join the military. We wish him well!
